Rare Bikes 13

Well if you thought twin headlamps were a recent innovation you can think again! Innovative Phelon and Moore, who manufactured motorcycles from 1900 to 1965, firstly as P & M and later as Panther, produced this set up in 1930. Although it had even been done before that, the Panther system was ‘unique’ and qualified for a patent by virtue of a novel dipped- beam system. The two headlamps were fitted to a common bracket, housing a small instrument panel. The offside lamp was for main beam only, while the nearside lamp could be rotated by a left-hand twist-grip moving the headlamp down and to the left, at the same time extinguishing the fixed offside main-beam lamp.”Seen here is PS892, a Model 60 of 598cc capacity which was first registered to Mr J A Phillips (Sonny) of Freefield, Lerwick. It later passed to Mr Christie Hawick of Urafirth. The sloping engine forming the front frame section was characteristic of P&M / Panther from their conception right through to the last Model 120 in 1965.The photo was taken at Mossbank while awaiting the ferry on the occasion of a ZMCC outing to Yell probably in July 1931, so the bike is virtually new. The club flag is just discernable on the instrument panel but dig the headgear with the club motif clearly visible!Joe
